How do you engage every team member effortlessly in the conversation?
One of the main keys is to create a respectful environment open to any ideas and suggestions. Only that way you don’t miss any important details that can lead to a brilliant brainstorming session. Each voice counts, and each piece of feedback brings you closer to finding what you are looking for.
You can start today with this simple tip. Learn to use AND instead of BUT in collaboration with your team. You will be surprised how far it can take you and astound how hard it is to apply. Break the ice and see who can go in your team longest without saying ‘but’. Our team had certainly fun with it. And don’t forget. Repetition makes perfect. Once you practice, you will become natural and skillful.
Stay fully engaged in the conversation. It should go without saying but unfortunately, nowadays it seems to be harder and harder for many of us to follow. Too many electronic distractions are involved, and too many good points are missed.
Here I would like to recommend a good read “You’re not listening: What you’re missing and why it matters” by Kate Murphy. Do you think you are a good listener? Find out.
And lastly the elephant in the room that nobody likes to talk about. Our very own Ego. The giant shield in perceiving other opinions by mistaking them for criticism. Nothing productive and exceptional ever comes out of it. But once you open your mind and your heart, that’s a different story.
